The AS&T program uses a holistic review process to screen and admit PhD students because we believe that equity can only be achieved by actively striving for it. We acknowledge the inequities that STEM students face prior to applying to the program, be it because of their race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, and/or socioeconomic background. AS&T application deadlines, submission instructions, and additional information

The application deadline for the Fall 2025 admission cycle is  December 2, 2024.

Please note that on-line applications must be submitted by this date.  We do not offer a Spring admission cycle, and by the rules of the Graduate Division, admission cannot be deferred to future years. Students should apply for Fall Semester admission during the year in which they intend to enroll.

All new applications must be submitted through the Graduate Division admissions website.

Begin by submitting your application through the above graduate admissions website well before the current deadline.  Applications that are incomplete by the time of review will not be competitive for admission. Making sure an application is complete is solely the responsibility of the applicant and should be done in a timely manner.

The application process is ENTIRELY ONLINE. Please DO NOT mail copies of essays, transcripts, AND TOEFL scores, publications, resumes or recommendation letters.

All applications must be submitted through the Berkeley campus’ Online Application for graduate admissions. Please take care to ensure all email addresses, as well as your own email address, are entered correctly.

In your online application material, please include any URLs containing your resume, research projects, and/or publications that you’ve authored or co-authored to facilitate review by the Admissions Committee.

Please note that AS&T requires that you name at least three (3) AS&T faculty members whose research is of particular interest to you. Please list them in order of preference and briefly state why.

When your application is complete and all required documents have been uploaded, be sure to click the “submit” button and wait for confirmation that your application has been sent.
